Bantering with Cocky and Funny
Cocky and Funny (c&f) is a form of banter. Though it has always been used by naturals, it has firstly been stated by David DeAngelo as: “Cocky and Funny is the magic combination of arrogance and humor”.
However, depending on the situation, there are some statements that are more insulting than others. Here’s a quick example:
1. I like that shirt. It’s amazing how well it hides your belly!
2. Nice shirt. Did you buy it new?
Supposing that the girl is skinny, the first one is extra funny, because she obviously has no belly! But what if she is fat? Even most of the normal-weigh girls believe they are fat, so the statement becomes too insulting. See the difference with the second statement? It’s independent of her weigh, but in its turn, it depends on her wealth. What if she’s very poor?
C&F works always for me, but at the beginning I used to find it hard to calibrate. There is a fine tuning for each individual situation and as you’re becoming more skilled you sense that from the beginning.
Another example:
She mentions a negative trait of her:
1. You reply: “I didn’t want to say anything…”
2. Pretend writing on your hand and say loudly: “Note to self: Do not date this girl”.
If she is c&f acceptable both are great. But if she is sensitive, the first one may hurt her (“I may call myself a fool; if YOU call me a fool, that’s an insult”), whereas the second one will still be funny to her. So c&f still works!
I use c&f ALL the time in my conversations, but I like keeping it fun for everybody. If the insult is directed to her, I want to see her laughing or see her obviously pretending that she is angry with me (i.e. hitting my arm).
One more advice: It’s nice to have some normal (normal = no c&f) conversation here and there. I used to be c&f non-stop with a girl I liked and at the end I couldn’t have a normal conversation with her, because she was assuming that I was kidding or making fun of her again, so be careful.
